Fish-n-Spin 'n Carp

Quick Links

Carefully placing my little Fish-n-Spin in the few open lanes between vegetation, I soon saw the quiet, ghost- like shadows appear that indicated the small panfish that played with me were going to have to wait, with bigger games now afoot! Cruising carp had located the handfulls of canned corn that I'd thrown out and were cautiously milling around, sucking up the chum. A corn tipped Fish-n-Spin quietly swam up to the general area and gently helicoptered the 3' down to bottom. Soon it was off to the races as another "golden torpedo" felt the tiny hook attach itself to his rubber like lips!

For some years now I've thrilled to light tackle jigging for nice sized carp. Rarely do we spinfishermen get much opportunity for true lunkers with our tiny baits, yet it becomes a common reality when applying a few easy, specialized tactics for carp. And,though I thought I'd about mastered this method, I discovered the 1/32 oz Fish-n-Spin actually improved several important aspects of fooling ole buglemouth!

Carp will take a small jig placed almost silently just right in his line of vision-however, in often cloudy water it's rare to even see the fish approach, let alone make the perfectly placed cast! But if one "chums" with about 1/2 a can of corn kernels, unseen, marauding carp will stealthfully try to consume every single piece before departing. So by "planting a small "corn field" you have an area to steadily cast that will attract, hold and harbour numerous carp of varying sizes. Naturally, in trying to "match the hatch", a yellowish tube tipped with a single plump corn kernel is swum right into the center of anticipated activity!

From several years observation I've noted that carp are extremely aware of everything around them and are most cautious about taking any jig of bait that enters their arena. So you have to sneak a jig in and let them think it was "their idea" to feed on it. A Fish-n-Spin can be cast beyond the feeding grove and then allowed to drop virtually unnoticed in with the other bait. I say virtually unnoticed because  carp seem to respond to the little humming spinner and search for the source of the natural vibrations. The small lure's gentle touchdown is another trigger that creates hunger pangs, yet on heavier jigs or ones that may hit bottom harder than Fish-n-Spin's soft downward hover, this clunk can scatter these cautious giants.

In talking with carp experts, many who specialize in highly refined English carping tactics(where carp fishing is KING and methods are extremely sophisticated), it may be noted that  use of lead, even as in sinkers, is frowned upon. Not because of conservation aspects, but because they feel lead emits "negative ions" which carp perceive and avoid. Guess what? The Fish-n-Spin is lead free, made with tin!

Another big factor which I'm currently enjoying is that the little tube bait can be soaked in the juice from a can of corn and actually holds WITHIN a bit of the aromatic ,carp calling liquid! To give you a shot at setting the hook, the carp must enjoy the taste enough to hold it in his mouth for at least a few seconds. Believe me, the time span of this mouthing is brief enough in most cases when Mr. Carp soon discovers any hardness to his lunch!

Set the hook (gently) whenever you detect ANYTHING even slightly moving on your line. The take of a carp can be unbelievably gentle (those hard runs of bait fishermen are only due to the fish already hooking himself, then bolting in panic). Just this morning I brought my Fish-n-Spin back in devoid of both the corn AND THE TUBE, despite feeling or seeing absolutely nothing on the end of the line for the minute or so it had been in the water! To this end I like to keep the little lure moving ever so slightly, pausing maybe only 10 seconds or so at each bottom location. Any slight stoppage or bump in your retrieve and you best be picturing a munching carp!!

This method requires a little patience and practice. Fish very much like you observe the big cranes doing-almost no physical movement while searching to spook a very wary fish. Note where you see carp frolicking and splashing on distant shorelines ,then plan your assault with a Fish-n-Spin and a can-o-corn! (and please carefully release these magnificent God given golden creatures-take a small pair of surgical forceps and WATER RELEASE-the little hook of a Fish-N-Spin will pop right out, and you'll enjoy the "shower"!!)
